Domestic solar Port Talbot: SA12 and SA13 coastal yield, Sandfields and Aberavon payback

Port Talbot’s domestic solar market sits in the shadow of its commercial narrative. The residential catchment across SA12 and SA13 — Aberavon, Sandfields, Taibach, Margam and Baglan Bay — benefits from one of the better coastal yield figures in the FLD coverage area.

Coastal yield: the SA12 and SA13 advantage

The PVGIS baseline for Port Talbot coastal postcodes runs at 960 to 965 kWh/kWp — slightly ahead of Swansea city and comparable with the Gower Peninsula. The Sandfields estate has a predominantly north-south street orientation with many rear gardens facing south or south-west.

Sandfields semi-detached payback

A 4 kWp south-facing rear-pitch installation on a Sandfields semi at 962 kWh/kWp generates 3,848 kWh annually. At 40% self-consumption, year-one benefit: approximately £731. On £6,900 installed cost, simple payback: 9.4 years. Adding a 7.5 kWh battery raises year-one benefit to approximately £940 and combined payback on £12,700 to 13.5 years.

Aberavon conservation area

Aberavon seafront carries Grade II listed properties within a conservation designation. Roof-mounted solar on listed or conservation-area properties requires pre-application consultation with Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council. In-roof integrated solar is the FLD standard specification for these properties. Properties within 500 metres of the coast also require marine-grade fixings and connectors.

Tata Steel transition: household context

The Tata Steel transition has affected household income patterns across SA12 and SA13. For households managing tighter budgets during the industrial transition period, the long-term energy cost savings from solar are particularly meaningful. A Sandfields household installing 4 kWp solar with battery locks in approximately £940 per year of benefit at current tariffs — a hedge against future energy price increases.

Baglan Bay new-build

New-build residential plots at Baglan Bay are being built to current Part L building regulations with renewable-ready specification. FLD advises Baglan Bay purchasers on solar integration before internal decorating makes cable routing more disruptive.
