Charging at home is where almost all EV running-cost saving comes from: an off-peak overnight tariff is a fraction of public rapid-charger pricing. Getting there needs a dedicated circuit, the right protection for your earthing arrangement, and a smart charge point that schedules itself. FLD has been wiring homes across Swansea since 1991, and we install EV charge points as an electrical job done properly - not as a bolt-on.
What we install
- 7 kW single-phase smart charge points - tethered (captive cable) or untethered (socket), OCPP-capable
- Solar-divert charging - a myenergi Zappi or equivalent monitors surplus generation and sends it to the car instead of exporting it

Why the earthing arrangement decides your quote
Most homes here are supplied on a TN-C-S (PME) earthing arrangement. If the incoming neutral fails, metalwork outside the house - including a car on charge - can rise to a dangerous voltage, so BS 7671 Section 722 requires that risk to be managed. Either the charge point provides integrated open-PEN detection, or we install a separate earth electrode. This is the single most common reason an online "fitted from £X" price grows on the day. We establish which applies during the survey, then fix the price.
Charging on your own solar
This is where FLD differs from a charge-point-only installer: we install the solar, the battery and the charger under one NICEIC Approved Contractor registration. A solar-divert charger watches your generation and diverts surplus to the car rather than exporting it at a few pence per kWh - so the electricity you would have sold cheaply becomes fuel instead. If you already have panels, we can retrofit a divert-capable charger to an existing array; if you are considering both, they are far easier to specify together.

Smart charging is now the law
Under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, every new home charge point sold in Great Britain must be smart-capable and default to charging outside peak hours. That works in your favour - the saving lives in the off-peak schedule - and we set it up with you at handover rather than leaving you with an app and a manual.

What it costs
We do not publish a headline "from" price for EV chargers, because the number that matters is your cable run, your consumer unit and your earthing arrangement - and a price quoted before those are seen is a price that changes on the day. The survey is free, takes under half an hour, and produces a fixed quotation covering the charge point, the circuit, any board work and the certification.
Our process
- 1Home survey
We check the three things that actually decide an EV charger install: your earthing arrangement (TN-C-S, TN-S or TT - this sets what open-PEN protection is required), spare capacity at the consumer unit, and the cable route from board to parking space. Most surveys take under half an hour and the quotation is fixed afterwards.
- 2Fixed-price quotation
You get one fixed price covering the charge point, cable, containment, any consumer-unit work and the certification - not a headline price with the groundwork added later. We tell you up front if your board needs an upgrade rather than discovering it on the day.
- 3DNO notification
Home chargers are notified to the network operator (National Grid Electricity Distribution or SP Manweb depending on your postcode). Load-managed installations are notified under EREC G100. We handle the paperwork.
- 4Install & commission
A directly-employed FLD electrician installs the unit, dedicated circuit and protective devices, then commissions the charge point and connects it to its app. Installations are carried out under our NICEIC Approved Contractor registration.
- 5Test, certify & notify
The circuit is tested to BS 7671 Section 722, you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate, and the work is notified under Part P Building Regulations. We walk you through scheduling off-peak charging before we leave.
