The challenge
Swansea Indoor Bowling Centre lit its main playing hall with 195 twin-lamp 2x35W T5 compact fluorescent fittings - 390 fluorescent tubes in total - running through long daily opening hours across the bowling season. Lighting of that age carries a high standing load, needs constant lamp and ballast replacement, and cannot be dimmed or zoned, so the hall ran at full output whenever the doors were open. The centre wanted to cut a large, predictable running cost without losing the even, glare-free light that indoor bowls demands.
Our solution
FLD designed a like-for-like replacement to modern LED. The 195 fluorescent fittings came out and 88 Ansell 77W dimmable LED luminaires went in - fewer, far more efficient fixtures laid out to hold a uniform lux level across the rinks. Because the new luminaires dim, the hall can now be set to the level each session needs instead of running flat out. FLD carried out the full installation, removed and disposed of the old fittings and tubes, and issued electrical certification for the new circuits.
The result
The upgrade cut the hall's annual lighting electricity consumption by 50%, with a payback period of 2.75 years on the works and an associated carbon saving of 5,943 kg CO2 per year. The centre keeps the light quality it needs for play, sheds the ongoing fluorescent lamp-and-ballast maintenance, and gains dimming control it never had before.
