The challenge
Leisure centres are among the more difficult electrical environments we work in. Sports halls demand high uniform illuminance with very strict glare control for broadcast-grade and club-competition use. Pool halls layer humidity and chlorine exposure on top, requiring IP-rated fittings throughout and strict bonding compliance. On top of that, the operator needed the centre to remain open for member sessions across the refurbishment window — scaffolded out-of-hours working only, with life-safety systems live across every changeover.
Our solution
FLD staged the works across pool, sports hall, gym and reception zones so that only one zone was offline at a time. High-bay LED fittings were specified with the appropriate beam angles and colour temperature for sports-hall use and with IP-rated equivalents for the pool hall, bonded to the pool equipotential network per BS 7671 Section 702. Emergency lighting was designed to BS 5266 with three-hour duration on the full escape route and tested at commissioning. Fire alarm interfacing was coordinated with the existing BS 5839 panel so that no detection zone went offline across the programme. A single NICEIC Approved Contractor sign-off covered the whole scope.
The result
The centre stayed open for members throughout the refurbishment, with measured illuminance up across every sports and pool zone and materially reduced electrical running costs through the LED conversion. The emergency lighting and fire alarm certification were accepted by the operator's insurers on first submission.
