Domestic solar Pontypool: NP4 valley residential payback, Griffithstown and New Inn guide

Paul Davies
4 min read Location Guides

Pontypool sits at the northern end of the Eastern Valley in Torfaen. The NP4 postcode covers the town, Griffithstown and Sebastopol to the south, and the commuter belt extending toward Cwmbran. The Eastern Valley’s north-south orientation is more favourable for solar than the east-west aligned valleys of the Rhondda and Swansea systems.

NP4 yield baseline

PVGIS yield for Pontypool NP4 runs at 952 to 958 kWh/kWp — consistent with the inland South Wales average, slightly better than the most elevated Heads of the Valleys positions.

Griffithstown semi-detached payback

Griffithstown and Sebastopol carry predominantly interwar and post-war semi-detached with south to south-west facing rear pitches. A 4 kWp south-facing Griffithstown semi at 955 kWh/kWp generates 3,820 kWh annually. At 36% daytime self-consumption, year-one benefit: approximately £706. On £7,000 installed cost, payback: 9.9 years. Adding a 7.5 kWh battery raises year-one benefit to approximately £893 and combined payback on £12,800 to 14.3 years.

New Inn and the Cwmbran commuter belt

New Inn carries 1980s and 1990s commuter-belt detached and semi-detached built to higher insulation standards than older town stock. A 4.5 kWp south-facing New Inn detached at 958 kWh/kWp generates 4,311 kWh annually. At 44% self-consumption, year-one benefit: approximately £810. On £7,800 installed cost, payback: 9.6 years.

Pontypool town terraces

Pontypool town centre carries Victorian and Edwardian terrace housing from the ironworks era with the characteristic tight inter-row spacing. SolarEdge optimisation is the appropriate default for these properties. FLD specifies SolarEdge selectively for NP4 terraces after site-specific shading assessment rather than applying it as a blanket catchment-wide specification.

Abersychan upper valley

Abersychan, north of Pontypool toward the Blaenavon approach, carries Victorian terrace housing in a slightly narrower valley section. The Blaenavon Industrial Landscape World Heritage Site does not directly create conservation planning complexity for residential solar in Abersychan’s main residential streets.
