Domestic solar Merthyr Tydfil: CF47 and CF48 upland payback, Gurnos estate and battery resilience

Merthyr Tydfil sits at 162 metres above sea level at the town centre. The CF47 and CF48 yield baseline runs at 945 kWh/kWp — slightly below coastal South Wales, consistent with the Heads of the Valleys zone. Upland position means winter sun angles are lower relative to local horizon obstructions, making accurate panel orientation and shading assessment more important than at coastal locations.

Gurnos and Galon Uchaf estate stock

The Gurnos and Galon Uchaf estates on the northern hillside are among the largest post-war council housing estates in Wales, predominantly 1960s and 1970s terraced and semi-detached. Properties are managed by Merthyr Valleys Homes RSL. RSL solar procurement accesses the Welsh Government Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, which FLD holds the MCS certification to tender for.

For privately owned properties in the Gurnos estate, a 3.5 kWp to 4 kWp system generates approximately 3,308 to 3,780 kWh annually. Year-one benefit: approximately £620 to £680. Installed cost: £6,400 to £7,200. Simple payback: 9.4 to 10.6 years.

Brecon Road corridor: detached upland stock

Properties along the A470 Brecon Road corridor — Cefn-Coed-y-Cymmer, Ponsticill fringe — carry newer detached and semi-detached with more varied roof orientations and larger plot sizes. South-facing pitches receive the full 945 kWh/kWp upland yield without town-centre inter-row shading.

A 5 kWp south-facing Cefn-Coed detached generates 4,725 kWh annually. At 50% self-consumption, year-one benefit: approximately £975. On £8,500 installed cost, payback: 8.7 years.

Battery resilience at Merthyr elevation

At Merthyr’s elevation, power interruption events during winter storms on the Heads of the Valleys plateau are more frequent than in lowland cities. FLD specifies battery systems with blackout protection as default for upland Merthyr properties — providing functional resilience alongside the energy arbitrage economics. Additional cost versus standard battery: approximately £400 to £700.
