Domestic solar Abergavenny: NP7 conservation area planning, Mardy payback and national park fringe

Abergavenny (Y Fenni) is among the most architecturally significant market towns in the FLD coverage area. Its position at the gateway to the Black Mountains and the eastern Bannau Brycheiniog National Park means that planning constraints are directly relevant to a higher proportion of domestic solar installations here than in most other locations we cover.

NP7 yield: the Usk Valley position

The Abergavenny yield baseline at NP7 runs at 955 kWh/kWp on PVGIS. Properties on the south-facing slopes above the town — Mardy Hill, the Hereford Road approach — may achieve yields marginally above this baseline.

Conservation area planning

Abergavenny’s historic core — the castle environs, the market town centre and the priory streets — falls within a designated conservation area. Monmouthshire County Council applies visual-impact criteria to roof-mounted solar on properties visible from principal public viewpoints. FLD recommends pre-application consultation before committing to survey and installation for conservation area properties. In-roof integrated solar is the standard specification for these properties.

Mardy and Hereford Road payback

The residential areas above the town centre carry 1920s to 1970s semi-detached and detached housing with south-facing rear pitches. A 4.5 kWp south-facing Mardy semi at 955 kWh/kWp generates 4,298 kWh annually. At 46% self-consumption, year-one benefit: approximately £840. On £7,800 installed cost, payback: 9.3 years.

National park fringe: Llangattock and Crickhowell approach

Rural NP7 properties on the Bannau Brycheiniog fringe may fall within the national park boundary itself. Bannau Brycheiniog NPA applies its own planning policies, distinct from Monmouthshire CBC policies for the fringe area. FLD clarifies the relevant planning authority at enquiry stage before quoting.

Battery resilience in the NP7 rural fringe

Rural Abergavenny hinterland properties on the Black Mountain approaches occasionally experience grid supply interruptions during severe winter weather. FLD specifies blackout-rated battery storage as default for rural NP7 properties where grid supply reliability is identified as a concern.

Getting an Abergavenny survey

FLD is 55 minutes from Abergavenny. We combine NP7 visits with Pontypool and Caerphilly east-Wales days. Call Paul on 01792 680611.
