Battery storage and EV charging Bridgend: CF31 industrial estate and INEOS Automotive supply chain

Bridgend’s commercial energy market is dominated by two trends that converged in 2025 and 2026: the electrification of the INEOS Automotive Grenadier supply chain and the accelerating transition to electric vehicle fleets across CF31 industrial estate businesses. The INEOS Automotive Bridgend context

INEOS Automotive’s Grenadier facility at Bridgend CF31 has published a net-zero manufacturing target. For businesses in the INEOS supply chain, the combined solar-battery-EV package produces both a financial return and a supplier qualification benefit. The financial case stands independently — but the supply-chain retention argument accelerates procurement decisions significantly.

Battery storage for CF31 industrial sites

Industrial businesses in CF31 on half-hourly metered tariffs carry demand-based charges that standard energy tariff analysis misses. Peak demand events — a compressor starting at 08:00, a crane motor starting mid-shift — create demand peaks that are charged at premium rates per kVA. A battery storage system sized to absorb those peaks can reduce demand charges by £8,000 to £20,000 annually on a mid-sized CF31 manufacturer.

Combined with a rooftop solar array providing daytime self-consumption benefit, the combined solar-plus-battery payback for a CF31 manufacturing site typically runs at 4.5 to 6.5 years — commercially attractive for a 25-year asset life with zero fuel cost exposure.

OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme for CF31 employers

The OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme provides a grant of £350 per EV charging socket, up to a maximum of 40 sockets (£14,000 per site). For a CF31 employer with a 30-space car park transitioning to EV vehicles, OZEV grant funding covers £10,500 of the installation cost — typically 40% to 60% of the total installed cost for a 30-point 7kW Type 2 installation.

Pairing OZEV-funded EV chargers with a rooftop solar array and dynamic load management system maximises the self-consumption benefit: solar generation during working hours is directed to EV charging rather than exported at the lower SEG rate. FLD programmes SolarEdge energy management to prioritise EV charging over battery charging during peak generation hours, ensuring EV charging runs at 4p to 6p effective cost per kWh of solar generation rather than at the grid import rate.

NGED export headroom for Bridgend

Bridgend sits in NGED territory. G99 Type A approval timelines for NGED in 2026 run at 10 to 14 weeks. The CF31 industrial estate substations carry reasonable export headroom in 2026, but FLD runs pre-application enquiries before committing to project timelines for installations above 100 kWp.

Ynni Cymru for Bridgend businesses
